In the Liggett Lower School, the focus is on
learning, growing and enjoying. We consider the whole child
in the design of a curriculum that engages interest and intellect,
invites inquiry and exploration. By blending a traditional
curriculum with the excitement of project based-learning, the
faculty guide children toward the development of important
fundamental skills. Our balanced program provides the youngest
learners with a solid foundation and prepares all students
for their roles as global citizens.
Expert and accomplished teachers guide children
to achieve the joy and confidence of learning in a nurturing
atmosphere of warmth and care. Our students develop skills
in literacy, mathematics, the arts, Spanish, science, social studies
and physical education – using an effective and exciting
project-based learning curriculum.
Academics in the Lower School are centered
in a traditional curriculum with a solid foundation in reading,
writing, and mathematics. We enhance this curriculum with innovative
theme, project, and problem-based learning opportunities, which
integrate all resource areas and disciplines.
In addition to language arts and social studies,
the core curriculum is extended through instruction by resource
teachers in the science and computer labs, media center, vocal
and instrumental music classes, art room, and physical education
program. A teacher in our learning lab provides extensions
in lessons as well as support in study skills in small, focused
peer groups as needed.
Technology is incorporated in all lessons
so that children acquire skills in keyboarding, web-based research,
the use of graphics, and power point presentations. State-of-the-art
interactive Promethean white boards are used in many areas
of instruction, including math.
Before - and after-school care is available
and extended day classes are offered in interest areas such
as foreign language, music, drama, chess, jump roping, crafts,
etc. Most importantly, the Liggett core values of respect, responsibility,
trustworthiness and compassion are emphasized in every area
of instruction, care, and conduct throughout the Lower School
day. |
